Now, IT CAN be played off line, by choosing to do so from the Ubisoft site, (unless you want to play the multiplayer campaigns). It MUST be patched to Version 1.2, for any of these mods to work, this is important! When the game was first released, it had to be played whilst connected to the internet on line through the Ubisoft site as it is DRM protected (to stop piracy) OK I can see the logic, BUT, it's the worst thing that has ever been added to modern games. First you need to patch it to V1.2 (available from Ubisofts site) before adding any of the mods. This web site is the major site for all the Silent Hunter simulations and by registering an account (free), you can download all the available impovement mods, to make Silent Hunter 5 a really playable simulator. BUT DO NOT DISPARE! This game can now be very much improved on, with the many modifications available from the web site The stock game is pretty much useless as released by Ubisoft and is full of bugs. This really makes it much more like actually being aboard a submarine. You can even access the main deck from the bridge, when surfaced (of course) and man the deck gun and flack guns if needed. Silent Hunter 5 (Forget Silent Hunter 4 if you prefer the German Uboats, as SH4 is based on the Americans against the Japanese in the Pacific, also drastically improved since its release) is based on the German Uboat War in the Atlantic and is quite different to its predecessor SH3 due to the ability to be able to interact with certain important crew members and be able to roam through the submarine from the Forward Torpedo Room right through the mess spaces, the control room, engine and elecric motor rooms, to the stern in the Aft Torpedo Room and even see what's cooking in the galley. Reading through all the reviews, this, the latest of the Submarine simulators, has received many bad comments, compared to its predecessor Silent Hunter 3.
